Economic and social development is highly affected by the impacts of climate change. It is crucial that the higher education system contributes to building skills and inter- and transdisciplinary knowledge for a sustainable and resilient society that is better able to cope with crises.
The 1Future: jOiNEd For sUsTainability - bUilding climate REsilient communities in Western Balkan and EU project aims to sensitise higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Western Balkans region to climate and sustainability issues and to support them in climate protection measures, as well as to integrate (higher education for) sustainable development and resilience in teaching and research. The HEIs serve as a link between various actors from business, science and civil society (NGOs) for the development of climate change resilient communities in the Western Balkans region.
Project objectives:
- Establishment of knowledge hubs for climate and sustainability at each university in the Western Balkan countries
- Establishing awareness of climate and sustainability in the universities of the Western Balkan countries
- Sensitising staff and student communities to the need for climate action at universities
- Increase synergies between academia, the corporate sector and the government to implement joint climate action and sustainability initiatives
- Strengthening networking and cooperation between staff and student communities of the Western Balkan countries and the European Union in the field of climate and sustainability measures.

The 1Future project comprises 18 project partners, primarily from the Western Balkans. The international project management lies with the Albanian University of Tirana. It is the largest university in the country. Six faculties and two institutes offer 174 degree programmes in three study cycles, with 779 full-time academic staff and around 28,550 students.
