Seven fairy tales written by HNEE science

The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is publishing a fairytale book that reports on scientific projects in a different way. It will be presented for the first time at the Open Day on 11 June 2022 and the following Fairy Tale Day.

Once upon a time... that's how many fairy tales begin, including those at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). It turns out that science and fairy tales are much closer than is generally recognised. Myths can sometimes become facts. Just as, for example, the claim that the earth is a disc was once disproved.
In the science communication project "Es wa(h)r einmal... HNEE (True) Storytelling", the boundaries between the worlds of science and fairy tales are blurred. While one research project focused on the interaction behaviour between red deer and wolves, this is transformed into the story of Little Red Riding Hood and the good fawn, who exposes the fairy tale of the evil wolf as such and has an owl for a grandfather. In this imaginative way, four scientific projects are presented in the HNEE fairytale book. These are current or completed research and transfer projects. One takes research into old, almost forgotten vegetable varieties as an opportunity to tell the story of an insatiable giant who experiences how a creature called a butterfly turns his simple-minded world upside down. Mythical creatures with their ideas and actions tell of innovation and progress. They try things out, meet each other and form alliances. They fail and get up again to try something new. Science also thrives on this. It is always in process, innovative and solution-orientated. A little wood mouse, who wants nothing more than to go to sea, knows all about this. A magical root and sustainable materials in boat building are part of her adventure, while forgotten wishes of Eberswalde citizens are at the centre of another story about the local Rofin Park.
Three further stories turn readers into narrators of their own fairy tales and tell of an unusual alumni project in which a princess plays an unusual leading role in a dry toilet.

On the HNEE Open Day, Saturday, 11 June 2022, from 9:30 a.m., you can get a first impression of the fairy tale book. At the stand of HNEE employee Melanie Adam, who implemented this project, there will be several screenings of a fairytale medley in the form of interactive puppet theatre. The film "Das Märchen vom bösen Wolf oder Rotwildkäppchen und die gute Fähe" will also have its premiere.
But that's not all - HNEE will be presenting itself on the forest campus with lots of information and hands-on activities. Pupils who want to find out more about HNEE's study programmes are welcome, as are parents, teachers and cooperation and research partners who want to take a look behind the scenes. Professors, staff and students will be on hand to answer any questions about studying, teaching, science and research.
The Eberswalde University Society will present the Engagement Award to students from 13:30.

On the following day, the official fairy tale day, more fairy tales will be shown: Sunday, 12 June 2022, from 10:00 a.m. on the Waldcampus, Alfred-Möller-Str. 1, 16225 Eberswalde.
The HNEE fairy tale book is currently being printed and will be available from August as planned. The "Eberswalder Hochschulgesellschaft" support association and the city of Eberswalde have contributed to the printing costs. It will be possible to read the book digitally on both days of the event.
