HNEE invites pupils to the 16th Children's University

This year's children's university at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is once again focussing on a sustainable future with topics from the natural sciences and humanities. The events for fifth and sixth graders from the Barnim and Uckermark districts will take place from 14 to 17 March 2023 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. on the HNEE city campus.

At the first event, the children will learn from Dr Lars Merkel, Dr Jan Dirk Epping and Andrea Hollmann from the Institute of Chemistry at Technische Universität Berlin how electricity can be generated using everyday objects. Dr Sylvia Wolf from the Humboldt University of Berlin will be talking about communicating with hands and feet and how quickly you can learn to speak with your hands.

On 16 March, the young scientists will go on a discovery tour with Prof. Dr Tobias Cremer from HNEE and take a closer look at the fascinating raw material wood. The children will learn what can be deduced about a tree's growth and properties from its external shape.

Moors were long regarded as mystical and eerie places. In particular, the myth that people had sunk into bogs has persisted to this day. Today we know that moors are habitats for numerous plants and animals and also play an important role in climate protection. Worldwide, moors store more carbon in their peat than forests. Together with Friedrich Birr from HNEE, the pupils learn interesting facts about the extraordinary peatland ecosystem in a lecture.
